What The Ninth Day Is About

Henri Kremer, a priest from Luxembourg, is held in the priest block at Dachau, where close to three thousand Catholic clergy were kept along with about a hundred Protestant pastors and some thirty Orthodox clerics. One day Kremer is released without explanation and allowed home, but only for nine days. Across those nine days a young Gestapo officer comes to him and asks him for something. The officer is theologically equipped and conducts the argument in the language of faith itself. Volker Schlöndorff's film is fiction with real ground under it: the Dachau diary of Father Jean Bernard. Ulrich Matthes plays Kremer, August Diehl the man across the table.
