What The Sudden Wealth of the Poor People of Kombach Is About

Volker Schlöndorff's film starts from a real case in rural Hesse in the nineteenth century. Eight farmers and day labourers who can see no way out of poverty decide to rob the coach carrying the prince's tax money. The film does not build the robbery as an adventure: it shows from the start how clumsy the plan is, that the men do not even know how they would hide the money, and that being caught is close to inevitable. What interests it is not the crime but the order that pushes people there, with the tax, the church and the landowner all parts of the same machine. Margarethe von Trotta is in the cast, and a young Rainer Werner Fassbinder has a small role. The telling is deliberately cold and distant.
