What The Noisy Requiem Is About
In the Kamagasaki district of Osaka live people who have severed every connection with the world outside, each of them assembling their own version of love. Yoshihiko Matsui films that world in black and white, across two and a half hours, without softening any of it: there is sexual perversion, violence and cannibalism in it, and the film does not look away. The result was a work financed out of his own pocket that could find nowhere to play, with no cinema and no festival willing to take it. It nonetheless became one of the most talked-about Japanese independent films of the eighties.
