What The Orphans Is About
The writer Aleksei Bartenev sets out to find the brothers he was separated from during the war, and the search takes him back to his own childhood in the orphanage where he spent those years. What he remembers is not only deprivation; those hard years were still a childhood like anyone else’s, and the film holds the two facts side by side without separating them. Nikolai Gubenko’s ninety three minute Soviet film, in which he also acts, played in the main programme of the Cannes Film Festival in 1977. It took the Bronze Hugo at the Chicago Film Festival the same year and the main prize at the All Union Film Festival in Yerevan in 1978. Georgi Burkov, Aleksandr Kalyagin, Zhanna Bolotova and Rolan Bykov are in the cast.
