What The Outskirts Is About
The peaceful life of a village on the Urals steppe ends when the old collective farm is sold off to an unnamed group for the oil underneath it, and Filipp Safronov finds himself with nothing. The most stubborn men in the village band together and start tracking down whoever is responsible, one at a time, and the road runs all the way to Moscow. Pyotr Lutsik shot it in black and white, borrowing costume and score from Soviet cinema of the thirties and the title from Boris Barnet’s Okraina of 1933. What comes out is a revenge film that refuses to say what year it takes place in, imitating socialist realism and mocking it in the same gesture.
