What The Painter and the Thief Is About
Two of Barbora Kysilkova's most valuable canvases are taken from an Oslo gallery. The police have the thieves within days, but the paintings are gone for good. Barbora goes to the trial hoping for a clue and instead asks one of the defendants something nobody expects: would he sit for a portrait? Karl-Bertil Nordland says yes. Benjamin Ree filmed the two of them over three years, and partway through he stops the story and replays the same events from the other person's side, which is the moment the film becomes something else. What it ends up being about is addiction, debt and how badly each of them needed the other. It won a special jury prize at Sundance in 2020.
