What The Panama Deception Is About
Barbara Trent’s documentary takes the official reasons given for the 1989 invasion of Panama one at a time: protecting American soldiers, restoring democracy, capturing Noriega. Its argument is that none of them was the real reason, and that once Noriega had outlived his usefulness Panama was simply to be brought into line. Trent also shows how the government steered the press. An Empowerment Project production narrated by Elizabeth Montgomery, it won the Academy Award for best documentary. It is openly a work of advocacy, does not hide its case, and is best read alongside the other account.
