What The Peddler and the Lady Is About
Peppino, who sells fish in the famous market square of Rome, works alongside Elide, who sells vegetables in the same place, and the two of them bicker all day long. She has a soft spot for him, but neither Peppino nor his friend Aurelio the barber has any intention of marrying. Then Peppino meets a beautiful woman, Elsa, and the whole balance is upset. The film makes its comedy out of the noise of the market, the traders shouting at one another and a neighbourhood where everybody knows everybody. Love here is told not as a great event but as something that happens between the stalls. Aldo Fabrizi and Anna Magnani appear in Mario Bonnard’s ninety one minute Italian film, completed in 1943.
