What The Polish Bride Is About
Anna was brought to Holland under false pretences and forced into prostitution; she manages to escape and is found, exhausted and frightened, in a farmer’s field in Groningen. Henk, a taciturn man, gives her a place to stay, and the two strangers begin living in the same house without a shared language. In time an unspoken closeness forms between them, but the people looking for her do not give up and her past arrives at the door. The screenplay of Karim Traïdia’s eighty nine minute Dutch film was written by Kees van der Hulst. Monic Hendrickx plays Anna and Jaap Spijkers plays Henk. It was completed in 1998, was the Dutch entry for the 71st Academy Awards, and won Hendrickx best actress at both Rotterdam and Buenos Aires.
