What The Portuguese Woman Is About
In the north of Italy the von Ketten family is contending with the power of the bishopric of Trento. Ketten marries a woman from a distant country, Portugal; as soon as they return from the journey home he leaves again for the war. Eleven years pass. Rumours begin to circulate about the foreign woman living in the castle; some say she is a heretic. In the end the bishop dies, and with the signing of peace the ground that held Ketten’s life up disappears as well. Rather than telling events the film builds a state; fixed shots, music and a narrator who addresses the viewer directly set its form. Clara Riedenstein plays the lead in Rita Azevedo Gomes’s hundred and thirty six minute Portuguese film, completed in 2019.
