The Postman's White Nights

A small village on a lake in the north of Russia. The only way to the mainland is across the water by boat. Aleksey is the postman and the village's only connection to the outside. There is no work, no government, no social service of any kind. There is a spaceport not far off, and the village lives at the rhythm of centuries ago. The woman Aleksey cares for leaves the village for the city. Then the outboard motor on his boat is stolen and he can no longer carry the post. He decides to go to the city too, and comes back shortly afterwards. Andrei Konchalovsky shot the film at Kenozero in the Arkhangelsk region. Everyone in it is from the village itself; the postman is played by Aleksey Tryapitsyn. It won the Silver Lion for best director at Venice.
