What The Prince of Homburg Is About
The Prince of Homburg launches his cavalry into battle without waiting for the order and wins; then he is court-martialled for disobedience and sentenced to death. Fear of death strips away whatever was heroic in him, and the pardon he is offered, which he feels would dishonour him, opens a different question. The woman he loves and his fellow officers appeal to the Elector, while he is caught between his own wish to live and his sense of honour. Marco Bellocchio directed, from the play by Heinrich von Kleist. Andrea Di Stefano leads, with Barbora Bobuľová in the cast. The record’s summary contains a sentence implying the execution has already happened; both play and film go somewhere else.
