In the Name of the Father

1958, Italy. Angelo, rich and spoilt, arrives as a boarder at a religious school. The students there have had enough of the vice-rector, the rules and the way the priests teach. Angelo quickly settles into a kind of leadership among them and starts stirring things up, with the intellectual Franco and the shy Camma alongside him. First they get the prefect thrown out, then they stage a show like a piece of grand guignol, then they make an old teacher's corpse disappear. Marco Bellocchio directs; a hundred and nine minutes. He drew it out of his own years at boarding school. It was made in 1971, straight after the student movement, and the school stands in for a country.
