What The Prisoner of the Iron Bars Is About
Carandiru was one of the largest prisons in Latin America and was demolished in 2002. Before the demolition the director Paulo Sacramento ran a workshop there over several months. Twenty prisoners learned to use cameras and filmed their own lives. Hours of footage came out of it: the wings, the yard, the workshops, the daily work. The film uses that material together with what the crew shot. The account sets up no voice looking in from outside; the prisoners describe themselves. Who is holding the camera is the real matter of the documentary. The hundred and twenty three minutes are given to the last year before the place was closed. Paulo Sacramento’s Brazilian documentary was completed in 2004.
