What The Proud Rebel Is About
The Civil War is over. John Chandler, a Confederate veteran, is on the road with his son David and their dog. What he is looking for is a doctor who can make the boy speak again: the child has not said a word since he watched his mother die in the fire that took the family home. In a small town he is wrongly accused of starting a brawl and sentenced to thirty days. A woman named Linda Moore pays the fine, on the understanding that Chandler will work it off on her farm. Michael Curtiz directs, with Alan Ladd as the father and his own son David Ladd as the boy. Olivia de Havilland plays Linda. She has troubles of her own: a powerful sheep-raising family wants her land.
