What The Rat Savior Is About
A poor writer cannot get his novels published and is thrown out of his lodgings. In a boarded-up old bank he stumbles on a banquet held by a strange gathering and overhears a plan to kill a man. Before long he understands that these people are not people: they are a species of rat in human shape, taking places one by one. Krsto Papić directed and wrote it with Ivo Brešan and Zoran Tadić, from the Russian writer Alexander Grin’s The Rat Catcher, written in the twenties. The film hooks a horror story onto a question of class and power. It came out in 1976, runs eighty minutes and won a prize at Fantasporto in 1982.
