What The Real Glory Is About
The southern Philippines under American rule, 1906. A small group of officers and the local unit they are training defend a fort against the attacks of a rebel leader. Henry Hathaway builds the adventure formula of the period expertly with Gary Cooper, but its reading of history is plainly a problem now: the Moro people are shown throughout as fanatical and bloodthirsty, and the occupation itself is never put in question. Worth watching to see how American colonialism told its own story, and not for the history it claims to relate.
