What The Retrieval Is About
1864, with the Civil War going on. Thirteen-year-old Will and his uncle Marcus work for a white bounty-hunting gang, tracking escaped slaves and handing them over. The gang sends them north to find Nate, a free Black man with a price on his head. Will has to win his trust and bring him south. But over the days on the road Nate treats the boy the way nobody in his life ever has. Chris Eska made the film on very little money. Tishuan Scott plays Nate and Ashton Sanders plays Will; Sanders would later become known for Moonlight. It tells slavery not as an institutional picture but through a decision one child is forced to make.
