What The Return of the Prodigal Son Is About
Jan Sebek is being treated in a mental hospital after a suicide attempt, and his therapist tries to work out why he no longer wanted to live, talking both to the patient and to the people who know him and searching for the emptiness inside a young man who seemed content. His wife Jana claims to know nothing, yet she is conducting an affair with a family friend almost openly and with her parents’ blessing. Evald Schorm built the film out of the unusually high suicide figures recorded in Czechoslovakia during the 1960s, developing the story with the critic Sergej Machonin and the psychiatrist Milan Morávek, who also appears in it as an actor. The ninety eight minute film is among the sharpest works of the Czech New Wave and took a special mention at Locarno in 1967.
