What The Rise and Rise of Michael Rimmer Is About
Fresh faced and agreeable, Michael Rimmer worms his way into an opinion poll company and is soon running the place. From there he uses polling as a springboard into politics, and in the mini skirted, flared trousered Britain of 1970 he begins climbing the Tory ranks. The comedy and the sting both come from how little resistance he meets: surveys, publicity and the theatre of politics open every door in front of him without anyone quite noticing. Peter Cook stars in this ninety four minute British satire, whose script he wrote together with John Cleese, Graham Chapman and Kevin Billington, who also directed. Denholm Elliott, Arthur Lowe and Ronald Fraser appear alongside him, and the film reached cinemas on 12 November 1970.
