Abdellah Taïa M Mustapha Khaddar What The Road to Love Is About
A young French man of Algerian background begins a sociology study on the lives of Muslim gay men. As the interviews go on, things he had not thought about in his own life come out, and a closeness forms between him and a young French flight attendant. The journey runs from Paris to Marseille and from Amsterdam to Morocco, stopping at Jean Genet’s grave in Larache. The film was made on a small budget with a handheld camera and moves like a diary. The account does not turn the tension between faith and sexual orientation into a sermon about conflict; it leaves the people speaking with their own words. Karim Tarek plays the lead in Remi Lange’s seventy minute French film, completed in 2001.
