What The Sannikov Land Is About
This Soviet adventure film, directed jointly by Albert Mkrtchyan and Leonid Popov, is loosely adapted from Vladimir Obruchev's novel. Alexander Ilyin, living in exile, persuades the owner of a gold mine to fund a search for a temperate land said to lie beyond the Arctic Circle. The expedition sets out, and once they find the place the real subject begins: the people living there have their own order and their own beliefs, and the arrivals have no idea how to meet it. The film tells the adventure not as a hymn to discovery but through the consequences of the encounter. It was a large box office success in the Soviet Union, and two of its songs became known in their own right.
