What The School of Flesh Is About
Benoît Jacquot's 1998 film is adapted from Yukio Mishima's 1963 novel. Dominique, a senior figure at a Paris fashion house, is thrown by a young man named Quentin whom she meets in a bar. Quentin is bisexual and takes money for sex, and the differences in age and class quickly turn what is between them into a struggle over power. The film neither makes Dominique the ridiculous prisoner of a passion nor reduces Quentin to a one-dimensional threat; it leaves open what each of them wants from the other. Isabelle Huppert carries it, opposite Vincent Martinez. It competed at Cannes in 1998.
