What The Secret Nation Is About
Sebastian Mamani, a coffin maker, returns to the Aymara village he was thrown out of years before, carrying a great mask of death on his back. What he means to do is perform an old ceremony in which the dancer goes on until he dies; he was expelled for collaborating with a corrupt administration and taking aid money, and this is how he wants to pay for it. Along the way he remembers his past, and the separate worlds Bolivia holds inside itself, the tension between indigenous culture and the political structure of the cities, come out. Reynaldo Yujra appears in Jorge Sanjines’s hundred and twenty two minute film, completed in 1989, which took the top prize at San Sebastian.
