What The Shakedown Is About

Dave is a grifter who moves from town to town; he bets in a pool hall that nobody can hit him, then appears to rescue a woman in the street, and all of it is part of an arrangement built so that he will lose the fight that has been set up. It is a crew that has worked the same trick in small towns for years. But when an orphaned boy and a woman who works in a diner come into his life the reckoning changes, and for the first time he questions his own part in it. William Wyler’s early silent film looks at a working class district without falling into sentiment. James Murray and Barbara Kent appear in the sixty five minute American production, completed in 1929.
