What The Shameless Old Lady Is About
When her husband dies, Madame Bertini, seventy years old, decides to live her own life. She has spent all of it scraping by, keeping out of sight, existing for other people; now she is spending her savings, meeting new people and going out to see things. Her children and grandchildren find it shameful. Rene Allio adapted his first feature from a Bertolt Brecht short story, with music by Jean Ferrat and Sylvie in the lead. It is one of the few films that treats old age as a beginning rather than a withdrawal, and it carries its hardness quietly, with a smile.
