What The Shepherd of the Hills Is About
Young Matt Matthews runs a still in the Ozarks and has grown up hating a father he has never seen, a man who walked out on his mother and left her to die. The bitterness is not only his; it has soaked into the whole mountain. Then a stranger named Daniel Howitt arrives and starts to soften people, not by preaching at them but simply by standing alongside them. Henry Hathaway directs, with John Wayne as Matt and Harry Carey as the stranger. The feuds and the moonshine stay where they are, and the film moves quietly inside the western frame toward the question of forgiveness.
