Sergei Filippov What The Snow Maiden Is About
Pavel Kadochnikov’s 1968 Lenfilm production adapts Alexander Ostrovsky’s play and was dedicated to the hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the writer’s birth. Snegurochka is the daughter of Father Frost and Beautiful Spring, and her icy heart has known neither ordinary human happiness nor love until she meets Lel. His warmth opens the surrounding world to her and melts the cold beauty’s heart, which is also where the tale exacts its price. It was shot on the Mera river and around Ostrovsky’s estate at Shchelykovo, and the sets were afterwards moved to Kostroma, where they long outlived the film. It reached Soviet cinemas in 1970. Yevgenia Filonova plays Snegurochka and Yevgeni Zharikov plays Lel.
