The film is made of two bleak stories about the absence of love. In the first, a widow works herself to exhaustion in a hopeless attempt to save her dying daughter. In the second, two wandering musicians carry a bride off from her own wedding. Mircea Veroiu and Dan Pita's 1973 film shows the Romanian countryside with a hard, almost ritual silence, where faces, distances and music do more than dialogue. Eighty one minutes, counted among the most striking Romanian work of the seventies, and it resolves neither story easily.
