What The Strange Woman Is About
In a nineteenth century Maine town built on timber money, a poor girl works her way toward wealth. Hedy Lamarr's Jenny Hager uses her father, her husband, her husband's son and most of the men around her in turn, yet the film declines to file her under wicked woman; what it shows is a calculating survival reflex assembled in a violent childhood. Edgar G. Ulmer does not disguise the small budget, he weaponises shadow and cramped sets instead. Lamarr was not only the lead but had a hand in producing it, unusual for an actress at the time. George Sanders and Louis Hayward take the men opposite her. Who it is for: viewers who like the border zone where forties melodrama runs into noir. Who it is not for: anyone who needs a lead they can side with.
