What The Sweet Taste of Salted Bread and Undies Is About
Che Espiritu's 2018 Filipino film follows a small girl who takes away the pain of those she touches. She is homeless and moves from district to district. One day she meets an old man she cannot cure. The film does not explain the miracle; the narrative takes instead the bond between two lonely people and the inevitability of death. The tone is like a fable while the poverty is shown realistically. Bodjie Pascua leads. The production is small. Who it's for: those who like Filipino independent cinema and fable-like drama. Who it's not for: viewers expecting explanation; the film does not justify its miracle.
