What The Swindle Is About

Victor and Betty tour France in a motor home running small confidence tricks at conference hotels: she draws a man in, his wallet gets lighter while he sleeps, and nobody goes to the police. What exactly is between them is never explained, whether father and daughter, lovers or partners, and all the pleasure of the film is in that uncertainty. Then they go after real money and break their own rules. It is often called Chabrol's fiftieth film. The French title is what the croupier says at the roulette table when the betting closes. Huppert and Serrault work beautifully together.
