The film comes in two parts. In the first, Luciano, a drunk in an Italian town at the end of the nineteenth century, comes into conflict with the local prince and commits a crime. In the second, the same man is at the far end of the world in Tierra del Fuego, following a red crab in search of sunken treasure. The whole thing is framed by real hunters telling the story around a table, which is where the directors began, recording those men. So it is less an account of events than an account of how a legend gets told. Painterly, and patient.
