What King of California Is About
A father out of a psychiatric hospital believes there is buried Spanish treasure in the area where his daughter lives. She is sixteen, working alone, and has no time for it. The film shows him as neither entirely right nor entirely ill; the narrative watches the daughter forced into responsibility. The search takes place across suburban landscape and that is where the humour comes from. Mike Cahill wrote and directed, with Michael Douglas and Evan Rachel Wood. Who it's for: those who like odd father-and-daughter stories and low-key independent comedy. Who it's not for: viewers who find mental illness handled through humour uncomfortable.
