Mercedes Herrero What The Tao of Steve Is About
Dex, who everybody knew at college, is an overweight kindergarten teacher ten years later. He does have a system with women, though, which he calls the Tao of Steve, named after the type of man who is cool and pursued, in the manner of Steve McQueen. The system works until he meets Syd. The good thing about the film is that it does not try to justify the philosophy; what it describes is a defence mechanism, and it takes it apart step by step. Donal Logue won an acting prize at Sundance. The script came out of a friend who really had such a system.
