The Temptation of St. Tony

Tony is a middle manager. Driving back from his father's funeral he sees a pack of dogs on the road and finds a severed hand in the woods. After that day something is out of joint. He is told to cut staff at work, his wife is with someone else, everything in his house is in place and none of it means anything. Tony tries to be a good man, and the more he tries the further down he goes. The film ends up at an underground restaurant, and what happens there no longer belongs to the real world. Veiko Õunpuu directs the Estonian film; a hundred and fifteen minutes, with Taavi Eelmaa as Tony and Denis Lavant as the man who owns the restaurant. It was shot in black and white. The title comes from the temptation of Saint Anthony, and it proceeds like those paintings: the scenes do not join up, and each section stands as a separate trial.
