What The Temptress Is About
A woman leaves first her husband and then her lover to go after a young engineer, and the story, adapted from a novel by Vicente Blasco Ibanez, carries her from Europe to Argentina. The most interesting part of the film happened off it. Mauritz Stiller, the mentor who had brought Greta Garbo to Hollywood, began as director of this, her second MGM picture, and was fired by the studio after ten days; Fred Niblo replaced him, threw out everything already shot and started over. Despite all of that the 1926 film was a large success and secured Garbo's position in America.
