What The Testament Is About
In Amichai Greenberg’s 2017 film, Yoel is a meticulous historian in Jerusalem fighting a legal battle to have an Austrian site recognised as the grave of two hundred Jewish forced labourers murdered there in March 1945. While the case proceeds he discovers that his own mother has been living under a false identity, and the two investigations start running into each other. The film is about what an insistence on documented truth costs a man who has built his entire life on it, and it offers no comfortable resolution. An Israeli-Austrian co-production, it screened in Orizzonti at Venice and won best Israeli feature at Haifa. The case behind it is the Rechnitz massacre.
