What The Three from the Filling Station Is About
Willy, Kurt and Hans go broke, sell the car and open a filling station with the proceeds, and then all three fall for the same girl. Wilhelm Thiele directed this UFA operetta, with music by Werner Richard Heymann and lyrics by Robert Gilbert; the song Ein Freund, ein guter Freund came out of it and stayed permanently in the German repertoire. Erich Pommer produced, it opened in Berlin in September 1930, and it outgrossed even The Blue Angel. As an example of how light and quick German comedy could be in the first years of sound, it has not really been bettered.
