The Undertaker

Thiti Srinuan's 2023 Thai film follows Cherd, a law graduate. His father runs the village funeral business and wants to hand it over as his health fails, but Cherd is afraid of ghosts. The film opens as comedy and goes into the detail of funeral rites. The narrative shifts tone in the second half; horror elements enter, but the real matter is how grief is held. It belongs to a series of films set in north-eastern Thailand and was shot in the local dialect. It took an unexpectedly large sum at home. Who it's for: those who like regional Thai cinema and films that hold humour and death together. Who it's not for: viewers new to the series; some characters are assumed to be already known.
