The Vanishing of Pato

The Sicilian town of Vigàta, 1890, Easter week. Antonio Patò, a quiet accountant playing Judas in the Passion play the town stages every year, disappears once the performance is over. There is no body, no trace, and no visible reason for him to run: the man is simply gone. Two separate officials work the case, one from the carabinieri and one from the police. They dislike and distrust each other, and as they pick at the file separately they turn up the arrangements everyone in town knows about and nobody says out loud. Adapted from Andrea Camilleri's novel, the film carries the Vigàta familiar to Montalbano readers back by a century. Rocco Mortelliti runs the comedy and the investigation at the same time.
