What The Wait Is About
The Wait premiered in the main competition of the 72nd Venice Film Festival; director Piero Messina had worked as assistant director on Paolo Sorrentino's The Great Beauty, and The Wait was his feature directorial debut. The film carries some elements from Luigi Pirandello's play La vita che ti diedi and his short story La camera in attesa, though Messina has said it isn't a direct adaptation. The film was later acquired for US distribution by Oscilloscope Laboratories. Who it's for: anyone curious about the feature debut of Sorrentino's former assistant director, loosely inspired by Pirandello in a Sicilian setting. Who it's not for: viewers wanting a faithful adaptation of the source material, since the director has explicitly said it isn't one.
