What The War Bride Is About
Lyndon Chubbuck’s 2001 Canadian-British co-production is about the Englishwomen who married Canadian soldiers during the Second World War and crossed the ocean afterwards. Lily, from London, arrives at her husband’s family farm in rural Alberta and finds none of what she had pictured: cold, poverty and a mother-in-law who makes her position clear immediately. The film builds the war bride’s story not as a romantic reunion but as a long argument about whether she can be absorbed at all. Anna Friel plays Lily and Brenda Fricker plays the mother-in-law. Angela Workman wrote it from a true story, and the film won two Genie awards.
