What The Wasted Times Is About
Shanghai at the end of the 1930s. The Japanese occupation is coming and the city's syndicate is trying to find a route between accommodation and resistance. The film moves slowly and jumps back and forth in time, following the people around one boss, the betrayals, and the question of who actually belongs to whom. The answer is withheld; the real story appears only once the pieces line up. Cheng Er treats the gangster film with a melancholy, meticulous style of wide frames, silences and flat angles. Ge You is the boss, Zhang Ziyi the woman in his orbit, and Tadanobu Asano the Japanese brother-in-law whose loyalties are not clear.
