What The Water Margin Is About
Corruption under the Song dynasty in eleventh century China is so widespread that a band of a hundred and eight outlaws gathered at Liangshan Marsh becomes a resistance living by its own code. The film takes one section of the novel: how Lu Junyi and Yan Qing come to join them, and the battle with the Zeng Family Fortress. Adapted from the fourteenth century classic attributed to Shi Nai'an, the 1972 Shaw Brothers production was directed by Chang Cheh, Pao Hsueh-li and Wu Ma together. Nearly every action performer on the studio payroll at the time is in it, and four separate fight choreographers worked on it. Tetsuro Tamba and Toshio Kurosawa came over from Japan for it.
