What The Wayward Wife Is About
Gemma is caught between what she wants and the life she actually has, trying to carry a marriage and her own ambitions at once and finding both too narrow for her. Mario Soldati’s film starts from a story of the same name by Alberto Moravia, who wrote the screenplay together with Giorgio Bassani and Sandro De Feo among others. It neither mocks nor romanticises the desire of a woman from the provinces to climb; it counts the price she pays. Gina Lollobrigida and Gabriele Ferzetti star, and the picture opened in Italian cinemas in February 1953 before going to the Cannes Film Festival the same year. In 2008 critics placed it among the hundred Italian films that altered the country’s collective memory.
