The Wedding

Igor Šeregi's 2026 Croatian comedy brings a regional joke inside a family. The businessman Miljenko learns his company has filed for bankruptcy just as his daughter announces her engagement, her pregnancy and an imminent wedding; the only problem is that the groom is Serbian. Rene Bitorajac facing off against Dragan Bjelogrlić is the film's real engine, since both are familiar names in their own national cinemas and the encounter itself lightly reminds the audience of a historical weight. The film plays with nationalist clichés without trying to dismantle them, staying inside the wedding-comedy template and reducing the subject to two fathers-in-law being stubborn. That can be read as a good-natured call for reconciliation or as an evasion that makes the subject smaller. Who it's for: viewers who enjoy Balkan comedy, co-productions across the post-Yugoslav states, and the crowded humour of wedding films. Who it's not for: anyone wanting a serious treatment of nationalism, or unfamiliar with the context the jokes depend on.
