What The Welts Is About

In the Poland of the 1980s, twelve-year-old Wojciech has lost his mother and is left alone with his father. The man turns his anger on the boy and punishment is given with a belt. Now and then he tries to get closer, but it does not last. Nobody steps in. In the present, Wojciech is an adult journalist carrying his father's anger inside him. Magdalena Piekorz's film moves between the two times and shows not the violence but its result: the man cannot get close to anyone, cannot manage his anger, and spends his time alone in caves. What he builds with Tania is not enough to change it. The film won the Golden Lions, the top prize of the national festival at Gdynia, in 2004.
