What The White Sheik Is About
A provincial couple arrive in Rome for their honeymoon and come apart when the wife goes looking for the hero of the photo comic she adores. This was Fellini's first feature directed alone, and the seed of everything after is visible: the discovery that the world of spectacle, seen from inside, is cheap and held together with string. The husband spends the day pretending to relatives that he has not lost his wife, a sustained comedy of embarrassment. The wife's disillusionment is treated with tenderness rather than cruelty. Short, light, and unexpectedly useful for understanding the later films.
