1914. A liner leaves Naples carrying the ashes of a celebrated soprano and the entire opera world that has come to see her off. On the way they take on Serbian refugees, and an Austrian warship comes after them. Fellini shot all of it at Cinecittà: the sea is plastic sheeting, the ship sits on hydraulics, and the closing shot shows you exactly that. It opens as a silent-film pastiche and slowly acquires sound and colour. There is also a rhinoceros in the hold, as unexplained as the film itself.
